  • How is a Salt & Lime loan different?
At Salt & Lime, we like to keep it simple. We charge zero fees, with great rates, and fast service. In a unique approach, we also provide short financial education modules throughout your loan - with multiple discounts on offer for completing them. With no fees and the added bonus of interest rate discounts, this means you'll pay your loan back faster, paying less over the life of your loan.
  • What type of loans do you offer?
Salt & Lime currently offer debt consolidation, personal loans, and car loans. To keep things simple and transparent, all of our loans have no fees, low comparison rates*, and no penalties for paying ahead on your loan. *The comparison rate - or APR - reflects the true amount you'll be paying on your loans, once all fees and additional costs have been added in. If the APR seems high compared to the interest rate, it may be best to consider other options, as additional costs are likely high. Given that Salt & Lime charge no fees, and offer discounting for completed modules, our APR is actually lower than our interest rates - not higher. This means more money back in your pocket over the life of your loan. Please note that all loans with Salt & Lime require a vehicle in your name as security.
  • What is debt consolidation?
Debt consolidation is the process of bringing all of existing loans together, into a single, easy-to-manage debt. Managing several debts at once can be challenging, particularly when they all have their own interest rate, loan term, account login, and repayment date. This can make it unclear when you'll be debt-free, and hard to control a budget. Debt consolidation can help to bring down your overall interest rate, simplify your finances, and create a clear pathway to debt-free. For more information on how debt consolidation can help, please see here.
  • What is a secured loan?
A secured loan simply means that your car (or vehicle) is used as security against your loan. Please note that any vehicle used as security with Salt & Lime should be in your name, and cannot belong to a friend or relative.
  • Do you offer refinancing?
Yes - we would be happy to refinance your current asset finance contract. Please apply online, and note that we will need a recent, valid payout letter from your current lender.
  • What are your fees, penalties, and interest rates?
We have zero fees, and no penalties if you would like to increase your repayment amount, or repay your loan early. Our interest rates start at 20.50% (APR 19.46%) across all loan types. Your final interest rate will be personalised, and dependent on several different factors, including information contained in your credit report and bank statements. All interest rates are fixed for the life of your loan, and will reduce as you complete your financial education modules.
  • What happens once I’m approved?
Once you have conditional approval with Salt & Lime, you will first receive an SMS notification, followed by an email with further detail from us. 'Conditional Approval' simply means that we have completed an assessment of the information provided, and the loan amount has been approved. The loan can then progress to funding, providing certain additional conditions are met. The conditions will be listed in your email, and may be either financial or non-financial information that we would require to settle and fund your loan. For example, we may require copies of your recent payslips, or another form of identification. If all documents have been received with no further queries, you will progress to funding, and the loan can settle on the same day.
  • What steps should I take before taking out a new loan?
Whenever you're planning to take out any new finance - whether debt consolidation, car loans, or personal loans - the below essential steps will help to get you started on the right foot. Step 1: Check your credit history. This means knowing your current credit score, and checking over the last few months of transactions on your accounts, confirming all look correct. Step 2: Research the market. Compare and contrast loans in terms of their product offering - fees, interest rates, and respective comparison rates. Ensure you meet any eligibility requirements before applying; many Australian lenders will have minimum requirements of having Australian residency, and a minimum application age of 18 years old. Step 3: Apply for your loan. Once you have narrowed your search to a few lenders that you feel are aligned with your goals, apply! If purchasing a vehicle or other asset, you may have applied for pre-approval, so ensure you consider the amount approved with any potential further expenses that your ideal vehicle could cost.

  • How can I improve my credit score?
One easy way to improve your credit score is to start regularly paying back your debts. If you can demonstrate that you can consistently and reliably pay back a loan, your credit score will begin to rise. Multiple debt applications to several lenders within short period can also impact your credit score. In light of this, it is good practice to research thoroughly before applying for a loan, to understand more around what providers may be right for you. If you are unsure, or you're feeling short on time, a loan broker may be the best option. For more information on how to improve your credit score, please read on here.
  • Does submitting a loan application impact my credit score?
Yes. When you submit a loan application, the credit provider is required to report a credit enquiry to the bureau, which may have an impact on your credit score. For more information around impact to your credit score and how to improve, please read on here.

  • Do you need a reason for a personal loan?
While you don’t need a reason to apply for a personal loan online, most of the time, people looking to take out a small loan online are doing so for a reason. This may be to fund an upcoming trip, purchase a new vehicle, pay medical expenses or consolidate existing debt.
  • What is a secured personal loan?
A secured personal loan is a type of loan where a borrower must provide a form of security, like an asset, to be used as collateral against the loan. For instance, if you intend to use your personal loan to purchase a car, the vehicle will be used to secure the loan. This means that if you cannot meet your regular repayments, the lender can repossess the vehicle and sell it to cover the cost of the loan.

  • Will taking out a holiday loan affect my credit score?
Yes, taking out a holiday loan can potentially affect your credit score. When you apply for a loan, the lender will usually perform a hard inquiry on your credit report to assess your creditworthiness. This hard inquiry can negatively impact your credit score, typically lowering it by a few points. It’s also worth noting that regardless of whether you are approved or rejected for a holiday loan, your application for financing will be listed on your credit report.
  • Can I get a holiday loan if I am self-employed or have irregular income?

  • Can renovations be paid for with a loan?
Absolutely! Let’s face it, renovations can be expensive, especially if you’re thinking about undertaking a massive project. That’s why many lenders offer renovation loans as part of their product offering. Like any other loan, renovation loans feature an interest rate, repayment schedule and other loan features to help you pay off the loan. The Salt & Lime renovation loan is jam-packed with perks, from interest rate discounts that can be earned upon completing our education modules to receiving $100 off your loan when you refer a friend and have their loan settled.
  • Can I borrow extra on my mortgage for renovations?
Yes, you can typically borrow extra on your mortgage for renovations. This is commonly referred to as a “home loan top-up”. With a home loan top-up, a person can use the equity in their home to borrow additional funds against their mortgage for a renovation. If you are considering a home loan top-up, you’ll need to ensure your budget can manage an increase in your home loan repayments and whether you are comfortable with extending your loan term.
  • Should I get your house valued after renovating?
While it’s not a mandatory requirement, having your home revalued after renovating is not a bad idea. Renovations can significantly alter the value of your property and increase its worth and functionality. A new valuation gives you an accurate understanding of your home's current market value, which can be essential when making future financial decisions. Having an updated valuation also helps you determine whether you need to alter your home insurance policy, as you may need to increase your coverage. Real estate agents can provide an accurate post-renovation valuation and insights into current market conditions.

The Important Detail

A total of 3.50% in interest rate discount can be achieved over the life of the loan for completing financial education modules, where all 12 financial education modules will need to be completed for the full discount to be applicable. The first module will attract 0.75% in interest rate discount, and each module thereafter (11) will attract a discount of 0.25% each. Please note that the interest rate discount will place a borrower in advance on their loan, and will not alter the current contractual repayment amount. Please note that loans originated prior to 15 December 2022 can only achieve a maximum of 2.75% in interest rates discounts over the life of the loan, as an additional first module (attracting 0.75% interest rate discount) was introduced on this date.
